Saint Simon et saint Jude domptant deux crocodiles [the saints Simon and Jude taming two crocodiles]
Illustration in a Franciscan Missal, Ms 514, f. 308v, 15th century, Bibliothèque municipale de Lyon. According to legend, Saint Jude the Apostle and Simon the Zealot once tamed two ferocious tigers (duae tigrides ferocissimae) in Persia (Legenda aurea, cap. 159, p. 710 ed. Graesse). For some unknown reason the artist here changed the tigers to crocodiles.
